I remember asking Ken to put out the candles on his last Sunday home. His twin sisters were supposed to do it but they also said ok. He received a standing ovation as he walked back up the aisle. The news a few weeks later shocked my wife Brenda and I. Deb and the girls , as well as Ken, were considered family by Brenda and I. They still are and always will be. I was lucky to have trained with Kenny as a fellow medic. His sense of humor was contagious and it pulled me through the hardest times of training. No matter what the Drill Sgts laid down he never let them break him and he made all of us get through training much easier. I remember when I first heard the news, I was heartbroken. He was such an amazing kid with a bright future. I think of him when I am going through rough times and he still brings a smile to my face. I am sure he is playing all kinds of jokes in Heaven and laughing it up. He will be missed by many.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10697643732122910348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8077536894458666315.post-49560610743412678582015-05-23T15:16:22.553-05:002015-05-23T15:16:22.553-05:00Thank you for sharing your story. This is the story of many mothers, and you wrote it so well. My former husband was in the 82nd Airborne Division, sitting on a plane ready to jump into Cuba if President Kennedy so ordered. My son was deployed to Bosnia with an Apache helicopter Battalion and to Iraq 9 months after he returned from Bosnia. His son, my grandson, just enlisted in the Navy. I know what it is like to have your heart leap into your throat every time you hear about something happening. Your cousin is a brave woman. Thank you again.

Patricia Carlson
Boise, IdahoPatricia Carlsonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8077536894458666315.post-86236476563491776392015-05-22T20:31:02.928-05:002015-05-22T20:31:02.928-05:00Thank you, Thomas, for posting this loving and tou...Thank you, Thomas, for posting this loving and touching tribute about your cousin. It truly touched my heart.

My own husband, also named Kenny, was one of the "lucky" ones who came back after his tour of duty in Vietnam in the mid-60s. To this day, at age 69, he still remembers those friends he left behind in Southeast Asia - those who never saw their families again. He does not forget them. He never will.

My Ken puts on his uniform and marches in our Memorial Day parade, stand at attention in the cemeteries in our home town, and fires his rifle as a salute and tribute to those who have fallen. He remembers and honors them by doing so.

I hope we all will remember those who gave so much so that we could live in freedom to make our own choices. And I, too, will remember your Kenny.

SusieAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13032887372516258804noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8077536894458666315.post-21518170338270875782015-05-22T18:09:54.745-05:002015-05-22T18:09:54.745-05:00It is with tears rolling down my face that I leave...It is with tears rolling down my face that I leave this comment, a thank you to Thomas for creating a lasting legacy for Kenny through this blog post, and a thank you to his mother Debbie for raising a such fine, outstanding son whose contributions were obviously well-noticed by our military in their decision to enlist him. As the wife of a military member who's been deployed twice, I know that this could've been my story, but for whatever reason, it wasn't. My heart breaks when I pause to remember and thank all those who've given their ultimate sacrifice for our country. I may not agree with our military leaders' decisions to put our young people in harms way like this, but I fully support our military members and their families, and am only too aware of the costs of war here at home.

Thank you again, Thomas, for creating this legacy for Kenny and for putting a very real human face on our recognition of Memorial Day, not a day simply for picnics or barbecues or opening day at theme parks - but a very real day of memories, of thanksgiving for the less than 1% of the American population who voluntarily serves in our military so that the remaining 99% of us do not have to.

Kenny and his family will be added to my thoughts this Memorial Day weekend, and every day when I stop to consider the human sacrifices made in the name of peace. :-(Katherine R. While generally following his examples, I do make the following alterations:

First, I alter "photograph by Walter Dunn" to "Walter Dunn, photograph". Since elsewhere we generally cite creator/type of record/item, this seems more consistent.

Second, I omit "Amarillo, Texas". It strikes me as out of place at the end, since it really belongs with Mary's name and vitals, rather than separated from them (that's ESM's "Velcro Principle"). So at the least I would relocate it to after "(1881-1974)". But on further reflection, name, vitals and F-a-G memorial number seem sufficient to locate the record; I'm not sure "Amarillo, Texas" adds anything useful. So rather than fretting over where to put it, why not just omit it?

Finally, I empathize with Erika's desire to include a full URL directly to the record. It adds a level of convenience, and unlike Ancestry, URLs directly to memorials at F-a-G seem pretty stable, so I don't think that's much of an issue.

The purist in me, however, would say hey, wait! -- this is smack in the middle of the bit where we're identifying the site, not the individual record, so it's really out of place here. Whilst the pragmatist in me (who realizes nobody actually likes a citation cop :) says, if it's not creating any confusion, what's the problem?

So here's my model:

Find A Grave, database and digital images (http://www.findagrave.com : accessed 21 October 2009), Walter Dunn, photograph, gravestone for Mary Nancy McCaskill Massey (1881-1974), Find A Grave Memorial #15616487.nathanaelnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8077536894458666315.post-91927263475530651272015-03-21T04:13:08.396-05:002015-03-21T04:13:08.396-05:00Hello Thomas, I was very moved to listen to your s...Hello Thomas, I was very moved to listen to your story about the journey through Alzheimer's for your Mum and yourself.
