The Week in Facebook - 9/5/2008

This is a weekly feature which will document some of the genea-blogger happenings as they relate to Facebook®.

- Since last Friday, the Genea-Bloggers group has increased its membership by seven more members for a total of 161. Remember that Genea-Bloggers is a "closed" group which means that those Facebook users wanting to join must make a request and then be confirmed.

Why? I've found that "open" groups, while their membership numbers are much higher, tend to have postings and forum topics filled with spam if they are not properly moderated and the group is not as focused as a closed group. The Genea-Blogger administrators have been able to approve most requests within a few hours and very often will suggest the new members as friends to existing Genea-Blogger members.

And what determines confirmation? It helps greatly if the potential member already has other Genea-Bloggers as mutual friends with one of the administrators. This way we know that the person is serious about genealogy, family history or genea-blogging. But very often we will approve brand new Facebook users and soon find that they have lots of Genea-Blogger friends after making the plunge!

- There are even more events added to the September calendar including a meme by Julie Cahill Tarr involving family heirlooms (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=36579100389), the return of the Cabinet of Curiosities (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=38669511322), and a September Scanfest (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=22718254853).

Again, if anyone has a question as to how to use Facebook®, I'd be happy to help. You can always email me directly but if you post your question as a Discussion Topic at the Genea-Bloggers group, you might find that other members also have the same questions.
