My "On This Date" Dilemma

For several reasons I've temporarily suspended the daily posting of my "On This Date" series of posts. Besides being inundated with job search stuff, etc., I found that my current genealogy database program (FTM 2008) did not let me easily create a custom report with this information.

So here is what I've been doing:

1. I created a Custom Report in FTM 2008 containing the ancestor's name, and then all relevant dates (birth, baptism, marriage, etc.).

2. I exported this report to RTF format.

3. I opened the RTF in Word 2007, and then cut and pasted the data into an Excel 2007 file.

4. In Excel, I was able to utilize the Filter function for each column with data and entered a text filter such as Contains = September 18. This would display the results that matched my data query. Then I had to sort the data in date order.

5. Next copy and paste the names and year into the Blogger post in draft mode.

6. Go back to FTM 2008 to determine my relationship to that person.

7. Enter the relationship info into the post in draft, format and then post.

Too much work. I'd love it if there were an add-on or widget to FTM 2008 that allowed you to create queries - any type of query such as "What happened on this date . . ."

I spoke to my cousin Midge Frazel (8 times removed) of Granite in My Blood on Skype the other day and we discussed my problems with generating a report with the data I needed. She mentioned that several years ago Wholly Genes had a program available for the Palm OS that allowed you to do these reports. And sure enough I found it: GedStar PRO.

Does anyone know of similar apps or add-ons or widgets that would work with FTM 2008? I'd even accept a third-party application which meant I had to import data I had exported out of FTM 2008.

Otherwise I'll need to do some programming and create an automated report from a GEDCOM (ugh) or from a Word RTF file. This is why I am such an open source application enthusiast: I'm pretty sure someone would have used the code from the original genealogy database application and created a widget for use free of charge.

On This Date: September 11

On this day, Patriot Day, it didn't seem appropriate to list the births, baptisms, marriages and deaths of my ancestors. It is just after 6:00 am here in Chicago and with the sun creeping its way over Lake Michigan, I walked outside to hang my 5 foot x 8 foot United States flag as a way of remembering this day seven years ago.

As if I or anyone could ever forget.

Robert S. Austin. New York, New York, abt. 1917. Digital image. Privately held by Thomas MacEntee, [ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE,] Chicago, Illinois. 2008.

Deaths

Robert S. Austin, my great-granduncle, died on Septmber 1, 1924 having drowned at Long Beach on Long Island, New York.[1] He was born on October 13, 1894 in Lowville, Lewis County, New York to William Dence Austin and Catherine M. Austin (O'Keefe)[2].

"DROWNED AT LONG BEACH

Robert Austin, Formerly of Lowville, Loses Life on Labor Day While Bathing.
Robert Austin, 30, son of Mr. and Mrs. William D. Austin, formerly of Lowville, was drowned at Long Beach, L. I., Monday, but no particulars of the accident are at hand. The Austin family removed from this village to New York several years ago. Robert Austin was born here October 13, 1894. At the time of his death he held the responsible position of office manager for the D. W. Griffith Motion Picture Corporation, being in charge of the New York office. He was married about two years ago. Besides his wife and parents he leaves four brothers, Maurice, Harry, Ralph and Lawton, all of New York city."
[3]

"ATTENDS AUSTIN FUNERAL

James J. Donnelly, of this village, attended the funeral at Mount Vernon last Thursday of Robert Austin, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Austin, formerly of Lowville, who was drowned on Labor Day at Long Beach in his endeavor to save a young boy from a like death. Mr. Austin was struck by a large comber and the undertow took him out. He was grabbed by several who were near him, and brought to shore, where life guards and doctors worked over him for more than two hours, but were unable to resuscitate him. The force of the wave evidently injured him, and it was impossible to save his life."[4]

Baptisms

Elizabeth Putman, my 2nd cousin eight times removed, baptized in Albany, New York on August 29, 1754. The daughter of Lodowyck Arentse Putman (1713 - 1780) and Elizabeth Soets or Elizabeth Suitzin (1717 - 1780).

"Lodewyck (Arent, Jan), baptised at Schenectady, 14 November, 1713; he was killed by British and Indians, 21 May, 1780. He married Elizabeth Soets. Children: Derick, born 1746, died 1835; Arent, killed 21 May, 1780; Frederick; John L.; Hannah or Annatie, married 10 March, 1787, Jacob, son of Godfrey Shew, Esq. (Children baptised at Caughnawaga: Lodowyck Putman, born 15 February, 1792; Catrine, born 4 May, 1794.); Margaret or Elizabeth, baptised at Albany, 29 August, 1754, married Amasa Stevens, who was killed 21 May, 1780. (Child: Lodowyck, born 8 November, 1777).

Lodowyck Putman lived near Johnstown, New York. A party of Sir John Johnson's men proceeded directly to the house of Lodewyck Putman, an honest Dutchman living two and a half (miles) from Johnstown Court House. Putman had two daughters and three sons, two of the sons were absent. The old man and his son Aaron were killed. The mother and Hannah were spared. Amasa Stevens was also slain. The Putmans of the Mohawk valley were firm and outspoken Whigs, and it was commonly the case for the Tories with their Indian allies to attack the Putman farms in preference to others."
